NC-v4 EAp2:Minimum energy performance

LEEDv4 New construction - hotels, dormitory, multifamily

Greetings,

We are to create an energy model for a 8 floor building, which will be partially hotel, partially family apartments.

As per table G3.1.1.-3, for the above categories (specified as Residential) the Systems should be System 1 PTAC/PTHP.

Is this System 1 applicable only for low rise residential buildings? Is it possible to apply also System 5, which corresponds to the project building ?

Thanks

Dear Vassil I usually repare system type 1 for all residentials and system 5 or 7 for the rest of the building. I hope this can help Best Regards

The hotels, regardless how big they are (look in Las Vegas for example) are also categorized as Residential in table G3.1.1.-3

Right, so all residential units ( hotel rooms -> system 1) the rest 5 or 7

Yes just make sure you are following the appropriate Section G3.1.1 exception or exceptions.

Hi Marcus, Thanks for the reply. Could you please provide a kind if example on how to apply other system than System 1 for such a big building (applicable to System 5). The reason of my question is that I've been trying to find a reason while reading Section G3.1.1 exception or exceptions, but was not quite certain that I've come to the right answer. I'd highly appreciate your advise, espessialy  being many years a reviewer. Thanks

For this building type it often comes down to whether the support spaces are more than 20,000 sf. If they are then you reenter the G3.1.1A table. If less than 20,000 sf you might be able to justify a different system based on a difference in load or schedule.

Hi Marcus, Let me rephrase the question: If there is a multifamily building with 8 floors of apartments and the support spaces are less than 20,000 sf, then which system is to be applied. As I'm seeing it, all of the residential part should be System 1. Are there any other options. Thanks.

If none of the other exceptions apply then yes that is correct.

ASHRAE 90.1 does not apply to low rise residential altogether. So system 1 will apply to your residential portions of the project. Since it's a hotel, you'll likely have spaces that meet some of the exceptions, like a lobby or office, for which you can't use system 1. So your baseline model will very likely have multiple systems, system 1 + other system(s) based on Marcus' comment above.
