NC-2009 EAp1:Fundamental Commissioning of Building Energy Systems

CxA Qualification requirements

Hello,
i am looking to see if LEED requires any credentials specifically for the CxA like a certified commissioning professional or PE?

Could someone employed by the owner with the necessary project experience be qualified to complete Cx in the eyes of LEED? Would their name have to be on the previous projects LEED forms to count as experience? or just the Cx documentation for the previous projects?

LEED NC does not require a specific credential from any team member, except the LEED AP w/ specialty if the LEED AP credit is being pursued.  Someone employed by the owner could fill the role as the project's CxA if they have similar experience from previous projects. The previous projects are not required to be LEED projects, but rather should be similar programmatic space types with MEP systems that have similar levels of complexity.  In my experience, LEED reviewers are pretty liberal with enforcing this requirement. They might only question 'previous experience' if the Cx Summary Report was submitted by a 4th grader. Good Luck!

Not if I was reviewing David! By the way, I agree totally with you. Frankly, certifications, in general, are an indication of a level of expertise as demonstrated through education, testing, and experience. You have to know the specific requirements of any certification to understand its value and representation. Commissioning is highly technical and requires experience to perform well. Always look at the project experience. Some of the best CxAs I have known came from trades or technician roles...and some of the worst had some sort of certificate (and an attitude).
