NC-2009 EAp2:Minimum Energy Performance

DES allocation Calculator

Dear All,

I have a question regarding LEED V2009 BD+C New Construction and Major Renovation, EA P2 - Minimum Energy Performance.

We are working on a project pursuing LEED certification (NC v2009) using DES option 2 (aggregate building) and the monitoring method and we’re using the document “Treatment of District or Campus Thermal Energy in LEED V2 and LEED 2009 – Design & Construction”  as guide.

The building under certification is being built in a campus where a CCHP is already functioning and to which the Proposed Design will be connected. As such, we’ve developed a tool to try to allocate the fraction of hot water, chilled water and generated electricity to our building (and to associate the corresponding fuel cost), but since there isn’t an official template to do so, we’re not 100% sure.

However, we’ve noticed that there is an official USGBC tool used in O&M (“2009 and v4_DES Allocation Calculator”) for this allocation in existing buildings. Since O&M is intended for existing buildings, my suggestion is to use the energy simulation results as the “Building Metered Data” and check if the outputs match those from our tool and submit the calculator as evidence. Is this an acceptable approach?

Thanks for your attention.

I'm not sure whether the O&M DES Allocation Calculator will produce the same results as the document “Treatment of District or Campus Thermal Energy in LEED V2 and LEED 2009 – Design & Construction”. I recommend checking the outputs as you mentioned to see if they match. If that is the case it should be acceptable.
