NC-v4.1 SSc5:Heat Island Reduction

Area of Nonroof Measures

"Provide shade with architectural devices or structures":

Does this include the facade of an architectural building?

For Example: If I cover the whole facade with aluminium-paneels (SR of at least 0.33), then I can use the wohle facade for my calculation? (every 4 directions)?

thx!

Both the roof and non-roof measures address the horizontal areas of the site as these have the greatest impact on the urban heat island effect. An example of architectural devices or structures would be canopies or awnings used to shade parking areas or outdoor seating areas. I haven't heard of any projects using the facade of the building to contribute to the credit; I imagine you'd need some quantitative data to support any claims. At the USGBC website under the LEED Help topics, check the Addenda topic on how to submit a Project Credit Interpretation Ruling (CIR) or LEED Interpretation (LI).
