Here is the definition of a core learning space -  classroom or core learning space a space that is regularly occupied and used for educational activities. In such space, the primary functions are teaching and learning, and good speech communication is critical to students’ academic achievement. (Adapted from ANSI S12.60) These are the excluded spaces for this prerequisite from the Reference Guide. Excluded Space Types
Prerequisite requirements do not apply to natatoriums, auditoriums, music performance spaces, teleconferencing rooms, or special education rooms, such as those for severely acoustically challenged students. These spaces require special acoustical design and treatment that are not within the scope of this prerequisite or the referenced standards.

Hi Marcus, Chiming in here a few years later - can you please confirm if gymnasiums are considered core learning spaces? Also, flexible classrooms where kids meet in the common area for small group learning on occassion? I assume this is required but appreciate your insight.  Thank you! Sara

Hi all!  This is a 2-part question. 1) Thoughts on technical school classrooms such as an auto repair shop, auto body shop, and learning/commercial kitchen? 2) All of the above uses have very dirty functions within them. Has anyone had luck with materials that meet the NRC of 0.7, but are also rated for food prep use or other durability standards?

Sara since they are not on the excluded list I would assume that a gym is a core learning space as well as those occasional classrooms.

We put in a question for this, and yes wood shops, construction shop, hair dressing, teaching kitchens, CTS spaces are all core learning spaces. Seems silly when you clearly have the machines off when the teacher is speaking and providing the lecture
