Spec language for GHG Emissions tracking during construction

Has anyone had a Contractor track GHG emissions during construction? If so, any advice on how to include that in the project specifications?

Thanks!

Hi Yarden, We're gradually integrating the Sustainable Construction Leaders folks into the integrated peer networks structure so that they'll also be on the Green Gurus list, but not many have made the transition so far.  So I shared your query in the SCL forum, and it generated quite a bit of excitement. They're now creating a little ad hoc group to work on that spec language for you! Do you have a deadline by which you need it?

Hi Yarden and Nadav, Jim Newman, of Linnean Solutions, (Nadav knows him well), created such a report in 2013 named "Project Carbon Accounting, Measuring the Environmental Impact of a Construction Project". I have the report, but since our architecture firm was only tangentially involved as the designers of the space -- a commercial office space in Boston -- and the report was commissioned by the construction company, you should contact Jim directly to ask to see it.

Skanska has done work on this. Besides materials, they tracked worker transportation on some projects Stacy Smedley at stacy.smedley@skanska.com Larry Strain, FAIA LEED AP S I E G E L & S T R A I N A r c h i t e c t s 6201 Doyle Street, Emeryville, CA 94608 510.547.8092 x103 fax 510.547.2604 (Enter on 62nd Street) lstrain@siegelstrain.com www.siegelstrain.com

Thanks all! Nadav, that's great to hear! Not a hard deadline but how about 2-3 weeks? Larry, I'll reach out to Stacy directly, and Harry, that report sounds relevant! if you (or Nadav) have Jim's  info i'll gladly contact him to ask. much appreciated.

Hi Yarden, Contractors group put together a call to talk about this; lots of nuances and interesting issues about they would actually do this, but the answer to your question, per Stacy Smedley, is pretty straightforward. Here's your spec language: “Contractor shall track, manage, and show reductions of their Scope 1 & 2 emissions.” Then, for verification, you'd want them to show how they're doing it, and engaging with their subs on it, including having a reporting requirement in their bid packages and contracts with the subs. I'm hoping that at the Peer Networks show and tell Tuesday night at Greenbuild we'll get a 5 minute presentation on this. We can also look into setting it up as a webinar down the road. I love this cross-pollination between the networks!

Thanks Nadav - I am definitely curious about the nuances and issues part :) - especially from our end how to make our specs actually useful for the contractors that then do have to implement and verify. Looking forward to continuing the dialogue!
