Winter Summit 2019: Design Process

Attached are the raw notes from the Design Process Conversations.

And here are the Guiding Questions from the Agenda Survey:

  • Design Process: how to intervene to get better outcomes?

    • How do I crack the nut of making a difference within my firm in the Design Process?

    • What strategies alter our fast-paced design process and what are better ways for me to lead that change?

    • Which processes and project variables do we have some control over and how to leverage those opportunities?

    • Holistic thinking to reduce resource consumption; how do we create an approach that captures the benefits of a fully integrated design?

    • How do we create a solid, consistent design process across the firm?

    • Leverage points are good for the projects and people that are only interested in an easy button. Where’s the leverage?

    • Are there new parts of the process that have been ignored which should have not been?

    • Where’s the sweet spot of getting what we need from our high performance design team when it’s not intuitive to the designers and we don't have the fee to go too deep into energy modeling?

    • Also relating to working at firms of different sizes, how do we structure our design thinking for success and continue to push the envelope when it comes to sustainability?

    • How do we also include integrating tools into the design process?

    • Is intervening the right strategy?

    • A large concern of mine is unwilling clients, how do we best address this concern?

    • How do we leverage results to intervene and get better outcomes?

    • How do firms evaluate building performance early on in the design process?

    • Does this focus on front end client / project goal setting?  Or about design process? How about both?

    • When we are more focused on early establishment of goals, how can these can be maintained over time and linked to overall design goals?
