SCL Demographics Survey - Your Response Needed

Happy New Year!  I'm disappointed that this demographic survey is limited to "product" certification (in our case buildings are the 'product'), instead of also including operational metrics. It would be an incomplete picture to rate a PV panel manufacturer as green if it operated exclusively and intentionally from coal power.  I hope that this group can collectively agree on what it means to run a green construction company for every project, in addition to building green products only when the client asks for it.

Hi Conor, Thanks for raising this issue. Seeing your comment made me realize that we haven't really explained the intent of collecting this demographic info. This is a practice that was started early on in the Sustainable Design Leader days as a way of tabulating the collective reach and impact of the participating firms. So it was all about quantifying the scale of the "product." We didn't really revisit that intent in adapting it for this Sustainable Construction Leaders group. There has also been discussion, however, about putting together a program to rank construction companies on their sustainability, in a way that's more meaningful and sophisticated than what ENR does. If we did that, I totally agree that we'd want to include info on operational practices and policies. This was one of the proposed agenda items for the Summit last November, but it didn't make the cut into the final agenda. But I expect that there is still interest in pursuing that, and maybe this demographics survey can morph into that.  What do others think?   Nadav

Nadav, that’s correct. The point of this survey is to get a more comprehensive picture of: 1. How sustainability groups are structured at companies within the SCL 2. The types and amounts of projects being worked on by companies in the SCL 3. General company info of companies in the SCL There is nothing in this in regards to rankings or ratings; it is simply an attempt to paint a portrait of how our group is made up. Operational metrics will definitely show up if/when we revisit revising the sustainability rankings which I certainly hope we do.
