An awesome bicycle tour in store for the Winter Summit!

We just had a planning call for the tour, and I’m more convinced than before that: a) we picked a great location for this year’s Winter Summit and b) you won’t want to miss this tour!

Alabama’s Gulf State Park got a big infusion of funds from the BP Oil Spill (that’s an interesting story in itself), and now has some amazing new facilities. Alex Wilson was involved in one of the early charrettes; the master plan was done by Sasaki; Lake|Flato designed the new lodge where we’ll be staying—it's pursing LEED Gold, SITES Platinum, and Fortified certifications. Tenna Florian from L|F led the design and will help lead the tour, along with Corey Squire.

There is also an interpretive center by Architecture Works that’s pursuing Living Building certification, and a learning center adjacent to a town high school. The sustainability consultant on the interpretive center, Rebecca Bryant, will also be with us. These facilities are pretty spread out, so we’ll be cycling between them, with interpretive stops along the way on the bike paths.

If you’re already signed up for the Winter Summit, make sure to arrange your travel so you can be at the Park by 1pm for the tour. And if you’re not signed up yet (and you qualify as a current SD Leader), don’t miss you chance! Contact Jerelyn@BuildingGreen.com if you need details.

Following up on a question that was raised in the Regional Leaders call yesterday: It WILL be possible to participate in tour without riding a bicycle. The different destinations in the part are too far apart to walk in the time we have available, but it will be easy to travel by car if anyone prefers that to biking, and a car will be available to help with that.

Hi Jerelyn – will you please hold a spot for ZGF? I wont’ be able to get this together until the new year, but we definitely want to send someone. And what’s the chance of sending two? There may be more capability this year. -C From:

When I was in Gulf Shores in 2015 to advise on resilience during the Lake-Flato charrette for the new hotel (where we will be meeting), I spent a few hours exploring the nearby Gulf Shores State Park. It’s wonderful, and I’m really looking forward to the bike tour during the SDL Summit! It will also be fascinating to see how the extreme hurricane vulnerability there has been dealt with in the design of the lodge/hotel. The area experiences a hurricane on average of once every seven years—AND there is sea level rise to consider! The hotel was built, essentially, on the footprint where the last one washed away in a 2004 hurricane. This will provide a great backdrop to discuss resilient design during the Summit! I hope to see you in Gulf Shores, -Alex Founder, BuildingGreen, Inc. 122 Birge Street, Suite 30 Brattleboro, VT 05301 802-257-7300 ext. 106 802-579-4858 (cell) www.buildinggreen.com www.resilientdesign.org Twitter: http://twitter.com/atwilson
