Fourth National Climate Assessment Report

Hi: SD Leaders.  It was so nice to see so many of you at Greenbuild in Chicago. By now I'm sure all have seen the announcement of the release of the Fourth National Climate Assessment Report vol 2. (https://nca2018.globalchange.gov/) It's well worth a deep read - so much important and extremely informative material. I want to draw your attention especially to Chapter 11 on Built Environment, Urban Systems & Cities,  (https://nca2018.globalchange.gov/chapter/11/) Ann Kosmal FAIA is a Chapter Author, Chapter 28 Reducing Risks through Adaptation Actions (https://nca2018.globalchange.gov/chapter/28/)  (I served as Review Editor for this one) and Chapter 29 Reducing Risks through Emissions Mitigation.   A few timely quotes based on some of the Greenbuild presentations:

"The assumption that current and future climate threats and impacts will resemble those of the past is no longer reliably true."

"Adjusting to projected climate risk, rather than relying on interpretations of past impacts, has important implications for the location and design of built human infrastructure, engineering standards, insurance rates, property values, land-use plans and planning frameworks or processes, disaster response preparations, and cropland and forest management."

Read it and spread the word! There are great tools and resources for communicating key messages.

Warmest regards to all

Mary Ann
