Exemption for Protected Buildings

Hi, Is there any exemptions from the ASHRAE 62.1 for buildings that are protected by local authorities. For example such buildings are protected because they are of architectural interest. In such circumstances do we still need to comply with the minimum ASHRAE ventilation requirements or is there any exemptions ?

Hi Ciaran, you would still need to comply. Architectural significance, historical character, etc. will posed challenged to the design team, but they should not exempt the project from meeting ventilation requirements. I have designed many projects in historic buildings that require inventive solutions for ventilation, but we have always had to comply with ASHRAE 62.1.

On the historic buildings that I have worked on, we have always needed to comply with ASHRAE 62.1. One option would be to take a good look at the natural ventilation option, depending on climate.
