Airport Terminal - Baseline Building Lighting Power

Hi,

we are working in a project of a new airport terminal. In what relates with energy performance, baseline building lighting power is being calculated as follows:

- we are using Building Area Method with several building types (as recommended in ASHRAE 90.1-2010 Table 9.5.1 footnote a);

- General airport areas (halls, check-in, security, waiting, boarding, etc): Transportation (8,3 W/m2);

- Administrative areas: Offices (9,7 W/m2);

- Retail areas: Retail (15,1 W/m2);

- Food & Beverage areas: Dining: cafeteria/fast-food (9,7 W/m2);

Do you think this is an acceptable strategy?

We are afraid that LEED reviewers do not agree with this space classification (since an airport is a peculiar type of building) and force us to follow space by space method, where the allowance for the majority of the airport area (Airport - Concourse, 3,9 W/m2) is much lower than we are considering (8,3 W/m2).

Yes, sounds reasonable to me. You are allowed to, and actually sometimes required to, breakdown the project into to building types for different space types. In general the reviewer would not be allowed to force you to use the space-by-space method unless the building area method clearly does not address the situation. Note that there are some space-by-space areas with higher LPDs than the building area value for transportation. That said the space-by-space method is almost always to more accurate way model lighting. Another general rule to follow is if you are not sure take the conservative approach. Both of these general rules would point me toward modeling the lighting with the space-by-space method if this was my project.

Did you get the review reply from GBCI regarding the LPD calcualtion? can we follow the same approach as described using building area method for Airport project?
