NC-v4 EAp2:Minimum energy performance

LEED and Elevators

Hello everyone,

I'm currently running an investigation about energy efficiency for Elevators. I'm interested in knowing if LEED sets limits/constraints on the energy performance for Elevators or if I have to check directly on the ASHRAE 90.1 2010 standard.

Elevators are not regulated by 90.1 so they are a process load. To claim savings for a process load you implement an exceptional calculation. Make sure to justify your baseline. Regenerative braking and premium efficiency motors are two of the strategies often claimed for savings.

Thank you Marcus. I'm sorry, but Being a newbie on the theme of LEED, I'm not sure I got it right. I saw that on section 12 (miscellaneous loads) of table Appendix G and table 11.3 of ASHRAE they do talk about elevators and I'm a bit confused. thank you.

90.1-2010 does contain some very minor requirements for lighting and ventilation in elevators, see Section 10.4, which are mandatory so they need to be met. These are regulated loads. However it does not establish any sort of minimum level overall elevator performance like it does for building envelop, lighting, HVAC, etc. That means the majority of energy use associated with elevators is not regulated by 90.1. Anything not regulated by 90.1 is a process load in LEED. All process loads must be modeled identically. To claim savings you need to perform an exceptional calculation. All energy use within and associated with the project must be included in the model. This is required by LEED. 90.1 also states that such loads must be included. Elevators are included in the definition of equipment. The examples you cite are just alluding to the fact that they must be included in the performance method of code compliance (Section 11) and in the method used to estimate savings (Appendix G). So they need to be in the models, and they should be modeled identically most of the time unless you are trying to claim energy savings under an exceptional calculation.

Hi Marcus, opening up this thread again - with regards to LEED v4.1 :
As v4.1 requires reference to ASHRAE 90.1 2016, are the above discussed conclusions the same?
I understand we have to report the elevator energy consumption no matter which standard, but since the 2016 version of 90.1 includes Tables G3.9.1, G3.9.2 and G3.9.3, so do we have to follow these now to define the baseline energy consumptions ?
