NC-2009 EAp2:Minimum Energy Performance

Parking Garage & exterior Site Lighting part of building Energy Model?

We Have two building pursuing LEED v2009 NC, both building share an underground parking garage. 

 

1) Should we include the artificial Lighting in the Parking Garage (serving LEED Building) in the Energy Model? 

2) Should we include exterior Site Lighting in the building's Energy Model? 

3) Should we separate the amount of energy consumption per floors serving each building? (in this case 4 and 1)

 

According to LEED Reference Guide EAp2 and ASHRAE std 90.1 2007, 9.4 mandatory provisions, its a yes to all three questions. 

 

But i would like to confirm with another professional opinion.

1. Yes this is part of the interior lighting. 2. Yes 3. Maybe if there is some sort of purpose to do so, but I am not clear about your question as it relates to a mandatory provision. Which mandatory provision are you referring to? It may also help to know how you plan to submit the projects for LEED - as two separate submissions or as one.

Hello Marcus,   The projects are registered as two separate LEED submissions, they are two different buildings inside a campus and each will have their own Energy Model.   3. What makes more sense to us is, if both buildings share the same parking garage, we separate the lighting energy per levels dedicated to each building, to include in their respective interior lighting. (Parking garage is 5 levels, 4 will be used by one building and 1 by the other). Sound correct?   The Mandatory Provisions I was referring to are: 9.4.4  &  9.4.5  which talk about exterior lighting, as I understand it, they confirm exterior lighting must be included. Parking Garage however I did not see in the mandatory provisions. However it is mentioned in table 9.5.1 of LDPs.

Makes sense. You will need to separate the parking area energy use between the two, so whatever makes logical sense. Exterior lighting is a mandatory provision. Parking garage lighting is not mandatory when it is interior lighting. Let's say you had a parking garage that did not have a building on top of it. If the top parking deck was outside then that part would be exterior lighting, the rest of the lighting on the decks with a floor above them would be interior lighting.

Hey Marcus,  Thanks for your reply.  So this brings me back to my first question, 1) If interior lighting in Parking Garage is not mandatory per ASHRAE Std, do we have to include it in the building's Energy Model? I'm pretty sure the v2009 Ref. Guide in EAp2, mentions Exterior Site Lighting and Parking Garage (I understand interior) in the requirements section.

Yes whether it is a mandatory or prescriptive provision does not matter. All energy use within and associated with the project must be included in the models.

Hi Marc, what about if the exterior lighting (parking lot lights) are 100% solar powered? No conduits to the poles.

Then you save all the energy use for exterior lighting.
