I'm Emily, GCI General Contractor's Sustainability Manager in San Francisco. Nice to meet you all.
I started with the company in 2013 and since then we've doubled in employees. I have been handling sustainability solo, until about 8 months ago, when we hired Alejandra Arce Gomez full-time to help manage the construction waste portion of our projects. We focus pretty heavily on diverting from the landfill, and from what I can see here on this forum from the comments, that's a big focus in other companies as well. I agree that this alone can make a huge impact on the environment.
There is no streamlined measure to tackle waste, as cities vary in their approach and facility infrastructure. There are many challenges we face in getting to zero waste, and I'm happy to brainstorm with others on various approaches.
Alejandra and I are starting on the TRUE Advisor certification and are hoping this will help us strategically navigate zero waste.
In addition to construction waste, I manage LEED, LBC, CALGreen, and any other sustainability client needs/requests. If anyone wants to geek out on the LBC Materials Petal, I've done two so far in the commercial sector.
