WS 2018--Embodied Carbon

Embodied carbon in products and existing buildings. What does LCA tell us about renovation vs. new construction and material choices?

Guiding Questions:

  • What easy ways are there to communicate about embodied carbon?
  • Are there easy ways to calculate it?
  • What do I need to know about LCA?
  • Are there any found patterns of when it makes sense to tear down vs build new?
  • How might this apply to renovations in schools?
  • How can I learn more about timber construction and other low-embodied carbon options?
  • How do I get the attention of clients and firm leadership on this issue?
  • How do embodied carbon and operational carbon relate, especially as the grid becomes more carbon neutral?

If anyone is interested in more info, please join the Embodied Carbon Network headed up by the Carbon Leadership Forum! The CLF will be releasing a Practice Guide for Whole Building LCA in about a month, and we will post on that site.

Here are notes from the Embodied Carbon break-out. And I second Meghan's invitation to join the Carbon Leadership Forum's Embodied Carbon Network. It's a great group!
