NC-v4 SSc6:Light pollution reduction

Courtyard Furniture Light

Hello,

For this credit, are we required to include any exterior lighting that are located in an interior courtyard that is surrounded by the building structure?  Most importantly, if we have fixed benches designed with lighting that is installed on the underside of the benches, can these lighting be exempted? It seems like it would be unrealistic to have these lights tested (along with the furniture?) to get BUG rating. Thank you in advance for your advice!

The BUG rating method is not for everyone. It is a quick, simple wayfor sites that are only using fixtures that have a BUG rating or one that can easily be calculated to comply. That is why there are the calculation methods. What MLO zone are you in? If you are in zones 3 or 4, you can exclude the fixed bench lights as landscape lighting. If not, you must include these in your calculations. But, it sounds like they should not be much of a problem.

I've seen tape lights with IES files. Any IES file or equivalent can be converted into a BUG rating. There is software and online websites that can do this. If the fixtures doesn't have any IES sort of file you might be able to persuade the reviewer. But expect questions. I would provide a section of how these lights are installed on the underside of the bench and that they have no uplight. No chance for any light between 90 and 180 degrees.
