Residential Bicycle Storage Inside Unit

Hello,

We're working on a residential high rise with ~200 units. We're providing 1 secure (long-term) bike storage space for each unit. Due to space constraints, some of the secure spaces will be in a designated Bike Room on the ground floor and some of the spaces will be provided indside of the unit itself through a bike hook mounted on the wall. I believe this approach will meet the credit intent but looking to see if anyone has input, has done it this way, or see any problem with meeting the requirements this way.

Thanks LEED world!

Hi Kristen, Yes, we have used this approach before for long-term bike storage, and it is perfectly acceptable for a multi-family residential project. Thanks!

Hi Kimberly, We contacted GBCI asking them to confirm in-unit bike storage was acceptable for our high-rise residential project and they came back with the following: "While bicycle storage may be provided inside the building, in-unit storage does not meet credit requirements. As mentioned in the Behind the Intent section of this credit in the LEED v4 Reference Guide for Building Design and Construction, "for residential spaces, long-term storage must be provided in an area outside individual dwelling units, because having to carry a bicycle into a living space is inconvenient and discourages bicycle use". " Did your past projects need to justify the in-unit bicycle storage somehow to get around the language in the reference guide? Thank you!
