NC-v4 MRp1:Storage and collection of recyclables

5 materials versus 5 material waste streams

Page 479 in the RG states that you need to identify 'at least five materials...targeted for diversion.' On page 481 in Step 3, the 5th step says that you need to 'specify the means and methods of diversion for each of the fied selected material STREAMS and the approximate amount of waste of each.' The emphasis is mine. When you go over to MRc5 and are using Diversion to earn the point, Option 1 requires the diversion of 3 material streams and Option 2 requires the diversion of 4 material streams.

It appears to me that the word 'streams' in Step 3 of the pre-req is incorrect and should be struck. Or is the intent to identify a minimum of 9 material streams?

Hi Susan, Good question. Step 3 on page 479 of the RG is referring to the actual materials you are looking to divert; cmu, wood, steel, drywall etc. These different materials do not necessarily represent different waste streams. For example, if commingled recycling is being used, a couple of the materials you've idenitfied may end up in the same waste stream. The intent of the plan is to get project teams thinking about the materials that will be the biggest contributors to waste. The RG defines a waste stream as a specific material or mixture of several materials that are diverted in a specific way. If the project only used commingled recycling, this would qualify as only one waste stream. Therefore teams may be required to get creative in finding sources for their recycled building materials whether that be reuse, donation, source separation of materials, or something else in order to have 3/4 different waste streams.  I hope this helps!
