EV Charging Stations

Hello - My client is preparing to purchase Tesla EV charging stations to meet LEED v4 requirements. These stations will work only with Teslas. I see nothing in the guidance to suggest that a proprietary unit will disqualify us from the LEED credit. Can you clarify that the Tesla stations will qualify for LEED v4? Thank you.

Dianne - Strictly reading from the ref guide language for LEED v4, an EVSE must comply with 3 conditions (paraphrase) 1. A Level 2 charger 2. Have an SAE J1772 connector and 3. Network/addressable and DR capable piece of equipment. From this guidance, I'd identify two issues that you may need to address with reviewers. First, the Tesla plug is not currently considered compliant with SAE J1772 plugs. There are adapters that allow SAE J1772 to connect to Tesla EVSE; however, I'm not aware of an LI or CIR that allow the use of an adapter to comply. Second, it isn't clear that Tesla equipment (either wall or supercharger) can be considered networked/addressable and DR capable. There is no product information or declaration that I've seen that indicates that capability as thoroughly as other manufacturers. This may be something you may address prior to submittal for review. I'm aware of Tesla charging stations being accepted for LEED v3 credit compliance. I'm just as curious as you to see if there are rulings that will allow these to demonstrate compliance, but on its face and reading from the ref guide, you may need to clear up or defend those two issues. Hope this helps!

I second Landry's comments. Dianne, have you reached out to LEED Coach to get some more clarification on this? Please keep us posted on anything you are able to find out!

Do you have any answer or clarification regarding the use of adapters?
