NC-2009 MRc5:Regional Materials

Concrete Regional and Recyle Content

I'm trying to verify the appropriateness of our approach to concrete for MR 4 and 5. Using the Materials Calculator and Tracker form; Concrete - total cost is the cost of concrete delivered to the site. Using the LEED Concrete Tracking Form, I can determine the total $ value for the SCMs per Cubic Yard. This $ value can then be interpreted as a percentage of the overall concrete (not only the cementitious material). The % of SCM relative to the overall concrete is quite low. For MR 5, I want to use the Concrete Mix information, to determine the percentage of material, fly ash, coarse, fine aggregate, cement, etc. was manufactuered/harvested within 500 miles. This percent (by weight) represents the amount of the concrete assembly that is manufactured/extracted locally. This percentage will be quite high. Is this a proper approach to dealing with Concrete?

Hi Rick,If I'm understanding you correctly, then what you're proposing totally works. You can count the fraction of the mix going toward recycled content, and the fraction that's regional, and put each toward their respective credit. You should also be able to get more recycled content credit for the SCMs by separating out cementitious materials from the overall mix on a dollar value basis (instead of mass). Then you would calculate the fraction of those cementitious materials that recycled by mass. This gives you a higher dollar value because the cementitious materials are only about 12% of the mix by mass, but much more than that in terms of dollar value.
