Efficient Hot Water Distribution System, Option 2, Case 1 states "no more than 0.6 gallons (2.3 liters) of water is collected from the hot water fixture before hot water is delivered." What specifically does "before hot water delivered" mean? Are we looking for a specific temperature? A specific temperature rise? Or is it just until the Green Rater feels like hot water is arriving?

It's pretty clear when the hot water has arrived, because first the standing water in the pipes between the water heater and the fixture (presumably cold, or room-temp at best) has to be pushed out through the fixture; there's not much mixing occurring in the pipes, so the change from cold to hot is easily detected.

Thanks. I'm used to my local water program that require the water to reach 100 deg F before taking the volume measurement or WaterSense that requires a 10 deg F temperature rise.

To be absolutely sure, you should check with your LEED for Homes Provider or QAD to see if there are more specific requirements I'm not aware of. If so, please share what you learn! Thanks.

Ryan, Just to clarify, you are correct in using the WaterSense criteria of a 10 degree F temperature rise in water between starting and stopping the measurement.
