We are renovating a university building with goal of silver certification. Prior to our starting on the project, the university had just re-roofed the building with a white roof which would likely comply with this credit, and which they thought could have been included in this renovation. What would we have to do to include this credit in our project?

If the existing roof is compliant with the credit requirements then you can earn the credit. The documentation requirements described in the LEEDonline form for SSc7.2 will still apply so you will need to find drawings from the roof replacement project showing overall roof sf, sf of complaint material and manufacturer data showing SRI value of installed product.

Summer,
The credit form is straightforward, but what is the chance we'll get denied because this wasn't part of our project? What about impact on other credits? While I could add the re-roofing cost to our project, I don't think we could include this in our construction waste calcs. since it probably didn't get tracked. Would it be better to submit as alternative compliance approach?

Paul,
I can't guarantee that this approach will be approved but I think your project meets the intent of the LEED credit and I think you can easily make your case to GBCI reviewers as long as the project submits a roof plan and manufacturer documentation to confirm the SRI of the roofing materials installed. I recommend you submit a narrative of explanation as to the re-roof project and explain why this scope is not included within CWM or MR credit documentation.
