We have steel lockers on our project which shall be produced by a steel company and painted in the factory. They claim to use low VOC or zero VOC paints. Must steel lockers be ANSI/BIFMA M7.1 tested and certified? Are lockers not produced by a furniture manufacturer system furniture? Thanks
Systems furniture is typically produced by a single (furniture) manufacturer to work together as a system. Unless the steel lockers are designed to function as part of the furniture system, it should not be necessary to certify them.
The location of the lockers could also be critical information. If they are located immediately next to, under or over a work space, then the review team would have a good case that they should be considered system furniture - in this case their certification would support the credit intent. If the lockers are located in a separate, central location then they would clearly not be system furniture.
