NC-2009 EAp2:Minimum Energy Performance

Waste Oil Fuel

I am working on a project that has two parts to the building. There is an office component and a shop component. The office is going to be heated and cooled with a VRF system. The shop will not be air conditioned but will just be heated 100% from a waste oil burner. The oil is used from the trucks that they use at the facility. Does anybody have any experience with something like this? How is this handled regarding energy modeling, etc.? The cost of the fuel should be 100% associated with the trucks that used the fuel. The shop portion of the building is getting the benefit of zero cost fuel. Any guidance would be greatly appreciated. We are also thinking of applying for an innovation credit. Thanks.

You need to use the same fuel and rate in both models. If the fuel cost is zero in the proposed it is zero in the baseline. If the cost is the cost of the motor oil then that cost must be identical. You can't derive a benefit in LEED from burning waste oil. It is not eligible for an innovation credit either as there is no environmental or human health benefits from burning waste oil. Its highest and best use it to recycle it back into motor oil.

More generally, you cant show savings by fuel switching. Only way to get credit would be to classify the waste oil as renewable, and treat it as you might a biofuel. But as Marcus said, waste oil is not generally considered renewable, and the reviewers are not likely to accept that approach.
