Guns to Rebar for Innovation Credit

I have a project that bought and used rebar in their facility that was from a program called "Guns to Rebar". Guns were collected and melted down and sold as rebar. Do you think it would be possible to achieve an innovation credit for this or would it only be utilized in the Recycled Content credit? Thanks!!

Hi Rachel, although interesting (and socially charged!) I doubt this would meet the criteria of a quantifiable, measurable benefit. Playing devil's advocate (I'm not taking sides in the gun debate here!), if the intent was to eliminate guns for social reasons, from an environmental perspective they could be made non-functional without melting them down (and all of the GHG associated with that process). Good luck with your project! David

If you are in need of an innovation credit, you may want to think about this more creatively - perhaps you can argue it more as educational tool, and as a step towards social equity. If you are planning on making this a part of your "sustainable story" that talks to reclaiming neighborhood safety through responsibly sourcing materials, you might just make a good argument.
