What is the definition of "functional, usable spaces"? Isn't a terrace or balcony a functional, usable space?
We are working on a major remodel of a conference center that has a plaza that is accessible from street level. The plaza is used by both the conference center and the hotel that abuts it as a pre-function and functional area for gatherings. It is over a ballroom that is owned by the conference center and leased to the hotel.
Is the plaza considered a functional, usable space?

Hi Jeannie,
I would assume this would be considered functional, usable space. In other sections of this forum, others have had similar cases and also counted them as such. There is a LEED Interpretation that defines functional, usable space in case you want to reference that with your submittal documentation.

Do you know the interpretation number for this? I am also trying to determine if a terrace is "functional, usable space" because the interpretation I've found - 10235 - lists helipad, sport courts, etc.

There is a LEED Interpretation that specifically addresses terraces, ID 3126. Hope that helps.
