Hi, this is Rebecca from Atelier Ten. The LEED reference guide states that "Environmental Product Declarations which conform to ISO 14025, 14040, 14044, and EN 15804 or ISO 21930 and have at least a cradle to gate scope" are acceptable for documenting compliance. I am interpreting this to mean that compliant EPDs must conform to ALL four standards: -ISO 14025 -ISO 14040 -ISO 14044 -ISO 21930 or EN15804 Is this a correct interpretation of the reference guide, or is it acceptable for an EPD to conform to only a couple of the ISO standards listed above? It's worth noting that the examples of acceptable EPD documentation shown in the reference guide do not mention all four standards.

Yes, I believe that it needs to comply with them all, but some may actually be buried within the EPD rather than on the front cover. Note the 14025 is for the EPD format for any product; 14040 and 14044 are for the LCA; and 21930 and 15804 are specific to how to conduct EPDs for building products. Anyone else have a better answer?

Oh! But I also just noticed this exception in the ref guide:For products not included in EN 15804 or the superseded ISO 21930 (i.e., furniture and other items not considered building products), conformance to ISO 14025 only is acceptable.

Hello, I was wondering if there has been any update to this thread? Has anyone submitted EPDs and received feedback or can confirm that all four standards do not need to be documented as met as long as ISO 14025 is listed? Thanks

Hello everyone, Is there a list of products not included in EN 15804 or ISO 21930, which can use ISO 14025 only, other than furniture? Also, from the thread on May 20,2016 titled "Compliance of an EPD", Panu said that EN 15804 implements ISO 14040 and ISO 14044. Does both ISO 14025 and ISO 21930 implement 14040 and ISO 14044 as well? If so, does an EPD that only states that it complies with either EN 15804, ISO 21930, or ISO 14025 (assuming the products is not included in the previous two), be considered a Product-specific Type III declaration? Thanks in advance!

If a PCR requires a standard, but the actual EPD does not state it but has been verified for said PCR, would it assume compliance? Or if the EPD lists the standards in the references section but does not explicitly state it conforms to the standard, would that comply? Many thanks!

Has there been an update to this comment? If an EPD lists the standards in the reference section of the EPD, but does not state it "Conforms", is this compliant? Additionally, the original comment at beginning of thread, does an EPD have to comply with ALL (3) of ISO 14025 + ISO 14040 + ISO 14044?

My understanding is that ISO 14025 requires compliance with ISO 14040/14044, so if you have an ISO 14025 compliant EPD it would be understood to comply with ISO 14040/14044. More specifically, Section 5.3 of ISO 14025 includes "The data shall be generated using the principles, framework, methodologies and practices established by the ISO 14040 series of standards (i.e. ISO 14040 and ISO 14044)." which I interpret to mean ISO 14025 requires your EPD to be ISO 14040/14044 compliant. However, I don't have any official reference to confirm that this is the case.

Mike, that's been my understanding as well, that conformance to 14025 implies that 14040/14044 were followed in developing the EPD. As you say, though, that's from outside sources, not the LEED rating system or reference guide.
