EBOM-2009 IEQp3:Green Cleaning Policy

Performance targets

For the green cleaning policy needs should a performance target for the purchase of green products and cleaning equipment be defined? It is understood that a performance target is part of IEQc3.3 and 3.4 but what should be included in the policy. Could wording implying that the purchasing of green products and cleaning equipment is encouraged be used in lieu of specific targets %? In addition, how specific does the information about the responsible party need to be? Can only simple reference to the Job Title of Responsible Party be included?

Hi Charalampos, A specific goal and performance metric (used to measure progress towards your goal) must be clearly written out in your policy. For example, a performance metric for cleaning products could be the percentage, by cost, of cleaning products purchased that are compliant with IEQc3.3. The goal would then be 50% (or whatever goal the project has set) of all cleaning products purchased, by cost, must meet the IEQc3.3 criteria. A performance metric and goal must be set for cleaning products and cleaning equipment. These can be included as a simple statement or a chart, etc. Please see the Green Cleaning Program Template under Resources for further guidance. The information about the responsible party does not need to be too specific. Be sure to include their name, job title, and a narrative that describes that this person(s) will be in charge of implementing this policy. Include all responsible parties if there are more than one. Again, a good reference is the Green Cleaning Program Template listed under the Resources tab above. Hope this helps!

Thank you Kimberly. What if the project does not pursue IEQc3.3 or 3.4? Could in this case the goal be less than the corresponding one required for credit compliance?

Yes, if IEQc3.3 and IEQc3.4 are not pursued the goal can be whatever the project team feels is an appropriate target for purchasing cleaning products and equipment. Keep in mind, however, the goals set are for the building staff to use to ensure continual improvement of the buildings green cleaning performance. Therefore, it is best practice to set the goals at minimum at the thresholds outlined in IEQc3.3 and IEQc3.4.
