NC-v4 EAc6:Enhanced refrigerant management

Fire suppression systems

Hi, Are fire suppression systems and their OPD and GWP addressed by this credit? LEED 2009 included a requirement that a project not install fire suppression systems that contain ozone-depleting substances (CFCs, HCFCs, or Halons), but I can't find the equivalent requirement in LEED v4. I am working on a project for which we are considering the clean agent fire suppression systems Novec 1230 and Inergen, which both have and ODP of 0. Thanks for your help.

Hi Jody, I just took a look at the credit form to check this out too, and I'm coming to the same conclusion that it does seem like fire suppression systems are no longer included in the credit language or documentation requirements. I'm not sure why this is the case either, and definitely think that it makes sense to specify less-harmful fire suppression systems either way.

Hi Melissa, I see you are a Expert LEED user. Can you give me any insight as to the importance (if any) of minimizing refrigerant loss in LEED rating system.

Similar to specifying less-harmful fire suppression systems, I think this is good practice regardless of inclusion in the credit and wouldn't let it discourage you at all. The primary reason that the LEED rating systems shy away from including actual leakage rates is because it's historically been difficult for most projects to track them, and not all tracking systems perform the same or take measurements on the same timeframe. Without a standardized, verifiable way to compare leakage rate reductions achieved in different buildings, it's just not possible to reward consistently across multiple projects.
