We are looking to install a 5000L Molok recycling bin for a LEED 2009 CS building that will be a restaurant. According to the reference guide a 11.6m recycling area would be required. However we believe that the 5000L Molok bin would be able to accomidate just as much or more than a 11.6m room that would most likely just contain a couple of large blue bins and a organic bin.
Has anyone had this problem before and if so how can it be solved so that it qualifies for MRp1.

We recently got review comments back for a project that had provided the "recommended SF" (along with a narrative describing pick-up frequencies, etc.) but the LEED Reviewer commented that "the narrative does not describe the expected volume of recycled materials. Note that, in order to demonstrate that the areas have been adequately sized, the size of the recycling storage area must be able to accommodate the amount of expected waste between pick-ups. Please provide a revised narrative describing the expected volume of recycled materials, and confirming that the recycling areas have been sized adequately, based on the expected volume."
So if you have a specific volume that you think is appropriate, and you provide some sort of justification of how you determined that volume, you should be good to go!

Michelle is correct in that some narrative that describes your anticipated volume of material, would be helpful in justifying your proposal. Work out that volume, and relate it to the capacity of the bin. Details on whether or not the material is comingled or sorted, if there is compaction, will also help. Frequency of pick-up is important as well.
