NC-2009 SSc7.1:Heat Island Effect—Non-Roof

Shading by trees

Hello, I have never documented this credit by using the shading option from existing tree canopy. I understand you'll need to calculate shaded area from each tree on June 21 at 10, 12, and 3pm. My question is how do I get those values? Thanks!

You need to determine the diameter of the canopy and the height of each tree. With that information you can determine the shade area the same way you do for structures.

Once the trees dimensions are approximated, The shading can be modeled in Sketchup or lighting software (like AGI32) that does daylight calculations. Not hard, but can be a little time consuming.

for Heat Island Reduction, there are discrepancies in calculating diameter of tree canopies, i.e 5-years or 10-years makes a big difference. Are there any new guidelines for v4 or v4.1?  Heat island effect – nonroof: Sustainable Sites v3 Provide shade from the existing tree canopy or within 5 years of landscape installation.   And Tree-lined and shaded streets: Neighborhood Pattern and Design Trees must provide shade within ten years of landscape installation. Use the estimated crown diameter (the width of the shade if the sun is directly above the tree) to calculate the shaded area.
