Meaning of ABS in trip reduction calculations

Hello. Does anyone know the meaning of ABS in the formula below? Trip reduction = ( 1- ( ABS ( 1.5 * h – e ) / ( 1.5 * h + e )) – 0.25 ) / 0.25 * 0.03 Where: h = study area households (or housing units) e = study area employment Thanks in advance.
