EBOM-2009 SSc5:Site Development—Protect or Restore Open Habitat

Invasive species removal service project

We are thinking of organizing an annual service project to remove invasive species in a nearby park to comply with SSc5. I'm not sure that planting new plants would also be done along with a project like this, it might just be removing vines and bamboo and the like. Any impressions of whether this would meet the credit intent for off-site restoration? What sort of documentation would we need to get to document for LEED? I'm assuming: project area and location, indication that it's an ongoing project, information about what plants (if any) would be planted in place of the invasives, etc.

Hi Andrea, My understanding that a single day of service isn’t typically enough to earn this credit. Usually it takes more of an ongoing maintenance/restoration effort to meet the intent. I think if you were to plan a series of service days (with at least one of them taking place during the performance period) and provided a detailed description of all the restoration activities/labor performed, it’s more likely to be accepted by GBCI.
