Working on an Island - NO MECHANISM TO RECYCLE MERCURY LAMPS

Hello, I am working with a resort on an island that currently does not have the capability to recycle mercury lamps. Due to that fact, the resort currently stores the old lamps as opposed to putting them in the trash. The storage is well done and similar to universal waste storage requirements but is this going to be a "no-go" on solid waste being it's required at 100%? They divert a TON from the landfill by selling furniture, donating electronics, recycling, 100% compost, etc. It would be a shame to not take credit for all of that being they do not have an option for mercury lamps. Thoughts appreciated! Thanks!

Nate. A good narrative explaining clearly what, how, when and why should get you through this with the GBCI...however..you're still going to have to answer the question.."What does happen to the lamps?"as it's obvious that you can't just keep storing them....and to be honest I'd like to know what you are going to change in all this to be able to recycle the lamps. (You say that this one island doesn't recycle the mercury...so what about other islands...the main land?

I have spoken to the largest vendor on the island for waste management, and they are in the process of putting together a HW storage area and develop procedures for exportation. Right now, the island has not signed the Basel Convention so it cannot export; however, it is my understanding from the resort owner, who serves on the government committees, that they are in discussions. My advice was to, at a minimum, create a safe storage area until they can be properly disposed and/or crushed and sent for recycling. Thank you!
