Calculating Concrete

How does concrete get logged on the MRc3 Calculator? Should each component be listed with individual costs for each?

Personally, I find it easier to get it all broken out and have things set up this way. This way the SCMs are clearly identified and they seem to be the biggest stumbling point during review. I believe that you can lump it all together but you'll have to do it all by % of weight and still prove the fly ash restrictions.

Did some reading up on flyash...there's basically no way to make anything with flyash in it meet the mercury content requiremetns. The LEED requirements are more stringent than the ASTM standards and manufacturer's are still playing catch up. So spec concrete mixes with no flyash if you need it to count toward regionally sourced materials portion of the credit. Grout mixes also fall into this category.

I've been hearing the same thing from my structural engineer. Great tip on the grout mixes!

Catherine, I know of a few projects using flyash that are able to get it below the required thresholds - it's not impossible, but it may not be available depending on the part of the country you're in. I did hear of one project in the Midwest that had to import slag from several states over in order to achieve this.

We're in the DC area and coal country is just down the road. Not sure what it is like where Catharine is. What is the situation on the west coast, Mara?
