NC-2009 MRc2:Construction Waste Management

Furniture Packaging Waste

Our client is purchasing new furniture for a newly constructed building. We're using the LEED NC 2009 rating system. Although small compared to the rest of the waste produce on the project, should the waste generated from the furniture packaging (e.g. plastic, styrofoam) be included in this credit?

Gavin - Sorry for my delay in responding. I was away from e-mail for a week. I have typically included waste generated on site until the contractor has removed the dumpsters from the project. So, if furniture arrives while the dumpsters are still on site then I would include the waste in the calcs. If, however, the dumpsters are gone, then I wouldn’t include it. I don’t think there is a hard and fast rule - but keeping the waste out of the landfill is the overall goal - whether or not it contributes to earning MRc2.
