CS-2009 IEQc6:Controllability of Systems—Thermal Comfort

Two methods: T-stats and windows in the same project?

Would a mechanically ventilated building be able to rely on 2 methods for documenting compliance: T-stats and windows? Some occupants will use one, while the others will rely on another. Would it be Ok in this case to say in the ventilation IEQp1 form that this project is only mechanically ventilated? If windows are used for compliance, does it have to be 1 window per 2 people? Or could 10 people use 1 window? Thanks a lot for your input!

Hi Diana, Yes, you can use both t-stats and windows in combination to meet the credit requirements. In terms of a window - one window would count as counting toward one control and for one workstation and not for multiple people. It would be treated in the same way as you would for the T-stat controls. For a window to count toward a control for any workstation I would review the ASHRAE 62 requirements " the openable area has to be a minimum of 4% of the net occupiable floor area. Where openings are covered with louvers or otherwise obstructed, openable area shall be based on the free unobstructed area through the opening..." Note that this requirement is slightly more stringent for projects in CA; T-24 calls for a minimum of 5%, window to floor area ratio.
