NC-2009 SSc4.1:Alternative Transportation—Public Transportation Access

Private Bus Service

Hi all, We are working on a new factory building in an industrial complex. The complex, located in a rural area is at least six miles away from the city boundary. The complex owner has a contract with a private bus service that picks up/ drops off all employees in the complex and drives them to the city with multiple stops per the passenger’s requests. There is no alternative transportation at all near the complex, however, there are a few public buses passing by the complex that are stopped if you wave your hand. Can we earn this credit in some way by changing or adding something? Thanks in advance for your answers or comments.

Daniel, You may have 2 possibilities; 1) is to see if there are at minimum 2 bus lines that can have a stop within 1/4 mile walking distance of your projects building entrance. Establish the stops and make sure the bus lines run during what USGBC calls the "most frequent commuting hours" on both weekdays and weekends. OR 2) if your shuttle can run at those same "most frequent commuting hours" to take occupants to a location where they can then choose from at minimum 2 bus lines - that should work as well. However from investigating LI's the maximum distance should be 2 miles for this shuttle ride. Perhaps there is a location(s) closer than all the way (6 miles) into town where this shuttle can go to to allow the multiple bus lines to be accessed.
