Natrual ventilation 62.1-2010

Hi! LI 4/1/2012 ID# 10165 allows to substitute the geometric requirements of ASHRAE 62.1-2010 sections 6.4.1 through 6.4.2 in place of ASHRAE 62.1-2007 section 5.1.1.. ASHRAE 2010 seems to not specify roof openings, just wall openings. Is this intended or am I missing something here? Has anyone used this method?

ASHRAE 62.1-2010 does not address stack ventilation. Likely because there is no easy equation to use, or ASHRAE simply forgot to consider it. I don't see an equivalence based on ACH would not work, except that it likely will confuse the LEED reviewers. Calculate the design ACH. Use the EQc2 Natural Ventilation calculation option, called Case 2 in that credit. Convert the ACH to a design CFM per occupant value. Try using the ASHRAE 62.1, Table 6.1, default occupancies. Lookup the ASHRAE 62.1-2010, Table 6.1, Combined Outdoor Air Rate. As long as the design rate exceeds the ASHRAE minimum you should be able to make your case for compliance.
