NC-2009 EAc1:Optimize Energy Performance

Fuel Cell & PV energy

Hi, our project is a commercial building which will get 100% of the electricity from PVs (20%) and Gas Fuel Cells (80%). Gas Fuel Cells produce electricity out of Gas, through a clean and highly efficient chemical process. They are not renewable sources of energy, but they highly reduce the carbon footprint since the onsite power generation avoids the losses carried out through power transportation. I have read thar PVs account for the Energy Modeling (EAc1). Would Fuell Cell account as well for EAc1? Regarding EAc2, it is clear that Fuel Cells cant be taken into consideration. Thanks in advance for your help, Gaston

The fuel cells would be modeled in the proposed. This would likely require an exceptional calculation. Basically take into account the gas usage as a consumption. See the LEED Interpretations and the DES guidance for further information.

Agreed - it would get modeled just like any other co-gen system.
