NC-2009 IDc1:Innovation in Design

Innovation points no longer recognized?

I have conflicting information on a few Innovation points that have been achieved on certain projects, but are apparently being denied on current projects being deemed "too easy" by the GBCI reviewers. Can anyone please confirm whether the following Innovation points are still viable or if they are no longer worth the effort to attempt? - Energy Star Equipment - Halogen Free Electrical Equipment - Low Mercury Lighting Thank you, Kris Phillips

Kris, we have had success with Low Mercury Lighting as an ID credit on NC and CI projects. The concept of gaining ID credits by implementing credits from other products is fairly well established. In this case we are implementing MRc4 from EBOM. We have gained this credit on 5 project so far (more are coming, but these are certified) for two NCv2.2 projects, one CIv2.0 project, and two NCv2009 projects.

No, we have not been involved in a project that tried the other two. We have a CI project that got Exemplary Energy Star, but that is obviously not the same thing. Again, if you are implementing something from another product, that would seem a good path.

Hi Kris, If you can document that you are meeting the specific requirements of a credit from another rating system, AND you are including a completed copy of the related credit form (i.e. for Low Mercury Lighting, include a copy of the EBOM MRc4; or for Energy Star, include a copy of the LEED-CI EAp2 Form with Table EAp2-4 completed listing all Energy Star and Non-Energy Star equipment - and probably include a copy of the EAc1.4 form as well to be safe), I would assume that you should be able to earn the ID point. If the credit that you are pursuing is an operations policy from EBOM (i.e. Green Cleaning, Sustainable Hardscape Management, etc), you must also show that your policy follows the LEED-EBOM Policy Model in order to comply.

Thank you for the explanation. I am familiar with the process of using a credit from another rating system as an innovation point in BD+C and have used this method several times. However, Energy Star was denied on a recent project - GBCI is saying this is no longer innovative. We will not bother to submit Energy Star again as it is too time consuming to bother with if it is going to be denied anyway. My question remains, has anyone recently been denied any of the following innovation points? - Energy Star Equipment - Halogen Free Electrical Equipment - Low Mercury Lighting We are willing to attempt Halogen and Low-Mercury lighting, but if the GBCI reviewers are denying these now for similar reasons as denying Energy Star (no longer "innovative"), the team needs to focus on other innovation points that are a better use of their time and more of a sure bet.
