Natural Ventilation Interpretation

Hi, Can anyone kindly interpret the sentence below from ASHRAE 62.1 2007 'All naturally ventilated spaces must be within 25' of (and permanently open to) operable wall or roof openings to the outdoors; the operable area also must be 4% of the space's net occupiable floor area'. I am having a bit of a confusing understanding spaces within 25'. Also is there any calculator available for natural ventilation. Thanks in advance Nandana

Nandana, With respect to the 25' requirement, if you were looking at a naturally ventilated room in plan view, all net occupiable space (see the definition in Section 3) in that room must be within 25' of (and permanently open to) the nearest opening to the outdoors. In other words, a person should never be able to get more than 25' away from an opening to the outdoors for a naturally ventilated space to comply with this requirement. I am not aware of any calculator specific to natural ventilation apart from the IEQp1 form, which includes a useful table for documenting the 25' and 4% requirements for each naturally ventilated space.
