Air intake minimum separation distance (Table 5-1)

Hello, I’m trying to evaluate the Air intake minimum separation distance in ASHRAE 62.1-2010 (table 5-1). Specifically the distance of the garage entry with all the openings. I have the garage just below an office plant with operable windows. Should I have to have 5 meters without operable windows? Could the minimum separation distance be from the place where the cars stop to insert the ticket to enter? The distance is from the exhaust pipe of the car? Thanks in advance

Ines. I would say that, unless you have some form of mechanical exhaust (negatively pressurizing the garage), those windows need to be 5 meters from the garage entrance, or any opening in the garage used for ventilation.

Rudolph, Thanks for your answer. I have another question. Parking garages have air class 2, so the distance from any opening in the garage used for ventilation (we have natural ventilation in the garage) need to be 3 meters to other windows, isn't it? Thanks.

Footnote 5 under table 5-1 of ASHRAE 62.1-2007 says that "distance measured to the closest place that vehicle exhaust is likely to be located". I'd interpret this as the distance to an exhaust pipe. However, if such is the case that high traffic volume is expected at the garage entrance, and since cars will be idling in that area, then the area will have large concentrations of CO. I would make sure the 5 meters are from the ceiling at the garage entrance to the lowest corner of any window. Using your best judgment as to where you suspect high contaminant concentration to be present, and then applying table 5-1 to those areas, would be the best strategy.

I agree with Rudolph, there are many situations where it´s almost imposible to install a MERV 6 filter in the evaporator. I have a new example, or may be it has been already discussed, and it is reagarding multisplit systems, where the evaporator is just a minisplit, wall type, where there is no place to install anything, has someone had this experience, how did you manage it?, Thank you
