MERV 6 Filtration exception

Does anyone know of an exception to the MERV 6 filtration requirement of ASHRAE 62.1 if equipment is incapable of housing a MERV 6 rated filter?

We had the same situation in a project that we couldn't install any other equipment except high-wall (with various structural limitations including low ceilings and large beams which eliminate the possibility of installing a standard ducted central air system). We have done a CIR explaining the situation and explaining that the Outdoor Air Ventilation has filter with efficiency of MERV 13. The CIR has been accepted, justifying that filter with minimum efficiency of MERV6 in the outdoor air ventilation, which would comply with the mandatory 5.9 for that project.

That's interesting. Highwalls really make it impossible to meet the filtration requirement. Built-in evaporators in ceilings are capable of housing up to Merv 9 rated filters so we are generally recommending the built-in type to meet the filtration requirement. I think they should make CIRs available for everyone to search through. I bet many people ask the same questions over and over again.
