NC-2009 MRc7:Certified Wood

FSC COC Certification and Sub Contractors.

I am a General Contractor attempting to achieve MRc7 on an Office Building. In order to achieve the 50% we will need both the Wood Fencing and the Millwork to be FSC Certified. My question is in regards to the Sub Contractors, Do the Millwork and Fence subs have to be FSC certified, or just be able to produce the FSC COC, from the wood supplier. For example, If my Fence Sub, purchases FSC Lumber from Home Depot, and produces a COC is this enough for the credit? or does the fence sub need to have this certification. Thank you , Leighton

Hi Leighton - If your Subcontractors are going to modify the FSC material in a shop or factory to fabricate 'assemblies' (I.E. cabinets and fencing panels) they would need to be FSC Certified themselves and provide you with their COC information and properly prepared invoices. Best, Doug

Doug, We are in the same situation as Leighton; however, I have a different interpretation. If a subcontractor purchases FSC materials (4x4s, 2x4s and fence slats) from an FSC CoC certified entity (Home Depot) and builds a fence in the field (not in a shop or factory), then the subcontractor building the fence would not need to hold an FSC CoC since it is not altering the lumber and slats, except for maybe cutting to shorten the length. Thoughts? Thanks, Mike

If the subcontractor builds the fence in the field, then they would not need FSC CoC, whether or not they alter the lumber/slats. In this case, they are the same as a framing contractor or anyone else on the job who may cut up FSC-certified lumber and other materials to specific lengths etc., or to a flooring contractor who cuts flooring as part of the installation process. If they build the fence in a shop, then they are the same as a custom woodworker and the current LEED interpretation is that they would need FSC CoC. If they manufacture and sell FSC fencing in a factory, then they would definitely need FSC CoC!
