NC-2009 EAp2:Minimum Energy Performance

Building Envelop Requirement on Manufacturing facility

I am working on a winery facility which includes office spaces and manufacturing spaces. Does LEED NC require the building envelop parameters (e.g. U-values, SC) of manufacturing parts of the facility space meet ASHRAE 90.1 Building Envelop Requirements as well?

The envelope requirements are not mandatory provisions so no specific level of window or envelope performance is required anywhere. The manufacturing part of the facility will have to include the minimum envelope values in the Baseline model just like the office.

Do I understand correctly that compliance with the mandatory provisions (sections 5.4 - 10.4) are required to achieve ANY points for EAc1? For example if the building has a motor that does not comply with section 10.4 but the energy simulation shows an overall improvement of 14% over baseline, can the building still achieve the extra points?

The mandatory provisions are required for this prerequisite which must be earned before any EAc1 points can be awarded. If you don't meet the prerequisite you cannot earn LEED certification at all. So the answer to your first question is yes and the second question is no.

Thank you Marcus, your reply answers my questions related to equipment efficiency but I still have a doubt related to section 5.4 and your answer to Xun Jia above. After reading section 5.4 carefully I cannot see where the envelope and glass requirements are not mandatory for the appropriate Climate Zone. I know I must be missing something but really cannot find where. Thanks again.

Section 5.4 can be confusing. I am guessing you are looking at some of the mandatory provisions like 5.4.1 and are confused. This section only applies to the insulation material characterisitics, not the level of insulation. Sometimes in 90.1 you need to connect the dots to make sense of it, so make sure you read the definitions and each of the referenced sections before coming to a conclusion. The insulation levels in Tables 5.5-1 to 5.5-8 are part of the prescriptive section 5.5 and are not included in the mandatory provision section 5.4.
