NC-2009 IEQp1:Minimum IAQ Performance

Dwelling Units with VRF HVAC system

Hi everyone. Im working on a high rise residential building with VRF system in each unit, located in climate zone 1 so heating is not applicable. Can we apply the natural ventilation (4% of the floor area minimum operable opening) approach to comply with EQp1? ASHRAE 62.1-section 5.1 says "...in conjunction with mechanical ventilation systems", is VRF considered as such? It sounds like no cooling / no heating system for me. If not, what would be the perfect approach? Hope to hear from you soon. Thanks in advance!

Question # 2. Shall I use the LEED 62MZ Calc worksheet to show IEQp1 compliance even if the HVAC system is VRF(constant volume flow)?

Mary Ann, If your project is only using the VRF units to condition the rooms (recirculating air through a cooling coil) and you are using operable windows to provide ventilation air (meeting all the natural ventilation requirements) .... ... then check "Natural Ventilation" and "Mechanical Conditioning" and do not fill out the LEED 62MZ worksheet. But note, if you have other spaces (eq Lobby, Offices, Hallways) that you are providing ventilation air to then you will want to check Mechanical Ventilation as well and fill out the LEED 62MZ worksheet for the appropriate zones and systems.

Hi Mary Ann, How did you manage the MERV 6 filters upstream cooling coils required by Section 5.9 of the Standard 62.1? thank you
