NC-2009 IEQp1: Minimum IAQ Performance
My project has designed UVC emitter in HVAC equipment. The design team believe this devices help reduce the space demand on outdoor air, and thus the project is planning to design the outdoor airflow rate lower than ASHRAE 62.1.
My concern is that would USGBC accept the reduce of outdoor air by using UVC emitter? Any opinion would be helpful to me. Thank you!

Yuan Yuan, a UVC emitter primary helps to reduce the growth of biological contaminants on cooling coils. Due to very brief contact time of air with the UVC light, they are not as effective at directly killing bacteria and viruses. The ventilation rates specified by ASHRAE 62 are calibrated to bio-effluent production, as well as emissions from interior materials and furnishings, which are not effectively treated by UVC lamps. It probably wouldn't hurt to submit an interpretation request to ASHRAE on this issue though!
