Option 2, which originated as an Alternative Compliance Path for non-U.S. projects, but which is available to all projects, allows a material to come from a farther distance than 500 miles if it reaches the site by more fuel-efficient modes of transportation (ship and rail).

LEEDuser previously advised, based on USGBC guidance, that the two options are available to be used on the basis of an individual product or material, allowing you to mix and match as needed. However, reference guide language and calculators don't appear to actually support this, and we have retracted this guidance. If you are looking to do this on a project, we recommed you contact GBCI for advice—and post your results here on the forum.

Question
What is the purpose of the newly added Option 2? Can I pursue both options?
